Writing the Way: Kaylin, journalism student extraordinaire!

Meet Kaylin. She is a recent high school graduate and a former Journalism Workshop superstar. To celebrate her as she pursues a college education, let’s go back in time through Kaylin’s experiences at 826LA.

Kaylin’s relationship with 826LA started when she was just 9-years-old, after her mother enrolled her in After-School Tutoring in Echo Park. That same year, Kaylin began attending 826LA’s ongoing Journalism Workshop, a new program at the time, where she quickly grew confident in writing articles for The Good Times. Kaylin found herself attending the workshop weekly, even after she was unable to attend the After-School Tutoring sessions in the space.

Throughout the years, Kaylin has written a range of journalistic articles on topics she has found interesting. As she has grown older, her articles have transitioned from simple opinion pieces about her favorite things, to more informative articles about worldly issues. For example, in 2012 she wrote about Disneyland—reporting that the Haunted Mansion ride had, “ashes of dead people who were cremated” inside, and the park’s VIP lounge, Club 33, “makes you wait 10 years just to get off the waiting list.” In her very last article called,“Groups Are Not Forever” Kaylin wrote about Brexit in detail and the big impact it’s having on Britain.

For the past 6 years, Workshop Coordinator Pedro has seen Kaylin broaden and develop her skills as a journalist. He says, “each time she came in, she brought a bright smile and positive attitude for journalism. Her dedication and love for journalism was clear. She was always eager to know when the next issue started and what to bring to the release party.”

Today Kaylin is 18-years-old and has recently graduated from Bravo Medical Magnet. She is attending Cal State University Northridge in the fall and majoring in, of course,  journalism! She even signed off in her last author bio of The Good Times exclaiming, “why not spend the rest of my life doing what I have already done for the past nine years!”

“It’s exciting to know that Kaylin will study journalism in college and maybe one day teach students in journalism, who will be reading articles Kaylin wrote in a newspaper,” Pedro said.

We are happy to see Kaylin pursue her passion and wish her luck in the future! Congrats!
