The Bards are Back!

By Taylor Saldana, Workshops Volunteer

Putting words on paper without second guessing myself has never come easy. That obstacle is the very reason why the game of Dungeons and Dragons enthralls me. It is a game that unfolds, rather than is played. You aren’t trying to “create” in the normal sense; rather you get to take part in a grand adventure.

That’s why I was excited to help lead 826LA’s DnD workshops. When you hang out with a close group of friends—or fellow volunteers and students—you’re simply along for the ride, and you get to influence the story just by being there. The pressure to create dissipates, and you’re left with all the good bits: the fun and the story.

Our spring workshop was four sessions long focused specifically on character development through DnD gameplay. We covered character creation and backstory in the first session. The second and third sessions respectively dealt with the character flaws and perspective–which of course lead to dubious decisions. After each of these brief lessons, the students were released into the world we created to wreak havoc and sow legends and save the day. The final session covered the hero’s journey and gave the students the tools to end their adventure in a satisfying and spectacular finale.

We couldn’t have gone on this adventure without help. Critical Role pioneered the workshop, and their continued support is invaluable—it leads more and more volunteers to our doors. We are grateful to all the volunteers who donated their time, sharing in the communal experience that is DnD. And a very special thanks to Philipp, a Critter who lugged all his books, maps, and minis all the way from Switzerland to teach Dungeons and Dragons to kids.

We used a Jenga tower to simulate the BBEG’s (Big Bad Evil Guy’s) health. It. Was. Awesome.

We are so grateful for the support of every Critter/volunteer that shares their love of storytelling with our students. If you are interested in becoming an 826LA Volunteer, sign up here
