Dust off your dancing shoes and ready your show-stopping moves because 826LA, a nonprofit writing and tutoring center supporting students 6 to 18, is hosting a dance-a-thon for its 10th anniversary.

Registration is now open for “Let’s Do the Time Warp,” slated for Saturday, October 18 at The Unique Space, 1275 East 6th Street in Los Angeles, with doors at 8 p.m. and dancing from 9 p.m. till midnight. 826LA is inviting all dancing machines to dance their hearts out for a worthy cause. Every dollar raised goes to 826LA’s free writing and tutoring programs.

“It’s become a tradition at 826LA to have fun and bizarre fundraising events like a Spelling Bee for Cheaters and the Paddle Boat Regatta,” said Joel Arquillos, 826LA’s Executive Director. “We like to keep things creative, and so in that vein, we’re looking forward to hitting the dance floor with our supporters to raise funds and celebrate 10 years of providing free writing and tutoring support to children throughout Los Angeles!”

Collect or donate at least $100 to get your official dance-a-thon number and be eligible to win prizes. But don’t just stand there. Bust a move!

Judges Joel Arquillos, Sonja Rasula of UNIQUE LA, and Rivka Rossi of HelloGiggles will be giving out prizes for Best Moonwalk, Best Friends Dancing, Most Convincing Robot, Best Dressed, Jitteriest Jitterbug, and Most Authentic Worm. Those voted People’s Choice and Dance Machine (Best Dancer), as well as those who Fundraise the Roof (top fundraisers for individual and team), will be awarded the grand prizes.

Pumping up the jams all night long will be a revolving door of popular DJs, including KXLU’s Mukta Mohan, dublab’s Lee Robinson, Origami Vinyl’s Neil Schield, Funky Sole’s Clifton Weaver (a.k.a. DJ Soft Touch), and LA Record’s Chris Ziegler. Contestants who raise more than $2,500 will get to “turn the beat around” and have their song request thrown into the mix during the final hour of the dance-a-thon.

Additional perks will be given to top moneymakers, and many more prizes and surprises are in store.

The growing list of sponsors includes Bites Desserts, Blue Bottle Coffee, Clif Bar, Golden Road, Homeboy Industries, Jarritos, The Magic Castle, Plumb, TOMS, and The Unique Space.

Dance-a-thon “fans” who wish to attend “Let’s Do the Time Warp” as spectators can purchase tickets for $25. Time travel costumes are encouraged, too.

This dance-a-thon is the first of 10 events planned for 826LA’s 10th anniversary. For more information, registration, and tickets, visit 826la.org/timewarp.
