What writers inspire your imagination?

Throughout the year, it is 826LA’s goal to inspire young people to discover the power of their voice by sharing their stories with the world. However, none of that would be possible without the help of our caring and dedicated volunteers. Here, After-School Tutoring volunteers share some of their favorite writers who have helped them discover the power of their voice.

“An author who inspires me is Roald Dahl. He is a novelist for children and teens who wrote fiction tales. I loved his stories like “The BFG” and “Matilda”, because they were full of imagination and humor. They helped me to not ever be afraid or ashamed to show my inner child.” – Nicolette

“My favorite author is [Vladimir] Nabokov. His characters are complex, his language exquisite, his images imaginative and challenging, his theme both modern and universal.” – Kathy

“John Green is the author who inspires me. He is a great author who captivates his readers throughout the entire book. My favorite book by John Green is The Fault in our Stars. He, despite being a male, wrote from the female perspective so well. He gets his readers emotionally involved with his stories, and every book I read from him I learn something about life. It is not a story with one meaning. His books are open to interpretation and his sentences are formulated in such beautiful ways. He definitely explores life from a variety of perspectives throughout his novels.” – Vichida

Last month, Disney VoluntEAR Patrick (right) presented a check for $5,000 from the Disney Foundation to 826LA!

“Dr. Oliver Sacks, his compassion for his patients and ability to clearly explain difficult neuroscientific ideas to the general populace give me a great deal of inspiration. I hope to follow in his example in the pursuit of my passions.” – Patrick

“My favorite author at the moment is Charlotte Bronte. I am rereading Jane Eyre in school right now with a focus on her childhood. It was called an autobiography when it was published. It is incredible to think that she was born nearly 200 years ago. She wrote this novel without a typewriter, computer, and probably without a professional editor. It is a truly amazing accomplishment.” – Sandra
