From 826LA in Echo Park

Name: Gwen Burke
Hometown: Tiburon, CA
Occupation: Previously in fundraising/communications, currently reinventing myself
Volunteers for: Barnacle’s Bookworms and special events

Favorite 826LA moment with students? When a student identifies with a character in a book we’re reading together…I get mushy every time!

What’s something you’ve been meaning to try but just haven’t gotten around to it? Scuba diving! I’d love to see some of the wacky creatures that dwell in the ocean.

From 826LA in Mar Vista

Name: Jeffrey White
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Occupation: Entertainment
Volunteers for: In-Schools and College Access, such as Personal Statement and Scholarship Writing Workshops

Favorite 826LA moment with students? I’m consistently inspired by the modesty and resilience of 826LA students. During a Personal Statement session, one student wrote about his experience in AP Physics. He originally left out the fact that they only offered AP Physics because he petitioned for it. Three times!

What’s something you’ve been meaning to try but just haven’t gotten around to it? Spicy Wontons at Mama Lu’s Dumpling House.

College Access Highlight

Name: S. “Scott” Feinerman
Hometown: East Hollywood / Silver Lake area of Los Angeles, CA
Occupation: Professor Emeritus, Tourism & Travel and Program Director/Division Chair, Aviation, Hospitality & Travel at West Los Angeles College
– and –
Director, Clergy, and Travel Industry Relations at Israel Government Ministry of Tourism – Retired
Volunteers for: In-Schools and College Access, such as Personal Statement Workshops and Field Trips

Favorite 826LA moment with students? When they realize that their respective story is unique and the foundation on which their future success is built.

What’s something you’ve been meaning to try but just haven’t gotten around to it? Perhaps, I am fortunate that I’ve done a lot and been to many places around the world. Now, continuing to provide direction and educational foundation to students who will be responsible for the future of our community, state, and country.
