TB Test Instructions

TUBERCULOSIS TESTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR IN-SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health requires in-school volunteers to have a TB test. If you plan to volunteer at any of our partner schools you must take a TB test and submit to 826LA written proof that the results are negative. All we need is a signed copy of a physician/nurse/technician’s lab report (the “letter of clearance”) that states you do not have communicable tuberculosis. Generally, you go in one day to receive the test (a small injection under your skin), and you return to get it read 48 hours later. You must return to have your TB results read 48 hours after the TB test. Failure to do so will make the results inaccurate and you’ll have to take another TB test. Please schedule your appointment at a time when you know you can return after a 48 hour period. Please ask your doctor or clinic for more specific information and instructions.

If you have had a TB test within the last 4 years and the results were negative, you may forgo another TB test. Just go to the doctor or clinic that ran the test and get a letter of clearance that states you do not have TB.

Letters of clearance are valid for 6 months from date of issue.

To participate in ANY In-School project, you must turn in a letter of clearance before you first volunteer.

Note: This does not apply to tutoring, field trips, or workshops.

RECOMMENDED TB TEST LOCATIONS

ALWAYS CALL TO VERIFY HOURS AND AVAILABILITY

YOUR OWN DOCTOR

This can be very convenient, especially if you already have a reason to make an appointment. If this is the route
you want to take, make sure that the test is covered under your insurance plan.

LA COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER

Having your test performed at a free clinic ensures that it will be free of charge! However, the LA County Public Health Centers do not schedule appointments. You must walk-in to have your TB test done. After the procedure, you’ll be given a follow up appointment to check the results. These free clinics tend to be very crowded, so prepare yourself for a wait.
