Student Writing: Johnna’s “How the Narwhal Got a Horn”

A long time ago near the ocean there was a unicorn hovering above the water and he saw a whale.

The unicorn asked if the whale could teach him how to swim and the whale asked if the unicorn could teach him to fly. Then they both agreed to help each other. The whale grabbed the magical flippers and gave them to the unicorn. The unicorn let the whale borrow a horn so that he could fly. They kept helping each other other like this every day. The unicorn got to swim and the whale got to fly. Eventually the whale grew a unicorn horn and it became a narwhal. This is how the narwhal got its horn.

This summer the students from 826LA’s English Language Learner Camp in Echo Park developed and refined their English language skills through creative writing. Each week covered a different theme: Food, World Arts & Culture, Nature, STEM, and Future Adult. The chapbook represents the excitement, hard work, and creativity of students as they explore and express themselves through writing.
