After-School Tutoring Overview
826LA was founded on the belief that individualized attention to students leads to great leaps in academic improvement. Our after-school tutoring program was born from that belief. During the school year, we offer free tutoring in the afternoon, Monday through Thursday, for students ages 6–11; and in the evening, Tuesday and Thursday, for students ages 11–18. Students gather into our writing labs at both 826LA in Mar Vista and 826LA in Echo Park to work on homework, reading, and writing with our trained volunteers.
Like all of 826LA’s student programming, after-school tutoring is free. If you are interested in a space in the program for your student, give us a call at the office!
Every day of tutoring, our volunteers wait patiently until eager students charge our writing labs, with heads full of questions about language arts, math, and even sometimes those confounded piano chord progressions. While 826LA’s overall focus is on student writing, we happily help all students work toward completing all of their homework. Our caring volunteers give students the one-on-one help they need, and their attention turns even the most tedious of assignments into an enjoyable afternoon of learning.
BEYOND HOMEWORK: READING AND WRITING
After students complete their daily homework, their time 826LA shifts toward reading and writing. They select a book from our in-house library (or bring their own reading), then settle down to read silently or aloud with a tutor. And once that’s done, they work on their budding creative skills by tacking a daily writing prompt or revising an already-drafted piece. These works are refined, then collected and published in chapbooks from our in-house publishers, Dogtown Books (at 826LA in Mar Vista) and Echo Press (at 826LA in Echo Park). The process of writing and publishing with caring volunteer tutors turns our after-school sessions into an imagination factory, making our program a challenging and rewarding atmosphere for future scholars and aspiring authors.
Enrolling in 826LA's tutoring programs
As an organization, 826LA aims to provide our free educational services to under-resourced schools, teachers, and students in Los Angeles. Due to high demand for 826LA's tutoring programs, 826LA gives priority to students who meet the following requirements:
- Students must qualify for Free or Reduced Priced Lunch (please note that the student does not have to be enrolled in this program)
- Students must commit to the tutoring attendance policy
- Students must commit to long-term and active participation in all parts of the tutoring program, including homework help, reading, and writing activities.
If you or your student meet these qualifications and are interested in enrolling in our tutoring program, please call our offices at the following numbers to speak with a staff member. Please note that our tutoring programs are currently full, but we are taking names on our wait list.
If you or your student do not meet these qualifications, we encourage you to be a part of our Workshop program. You can find more information on 826LA workshops here. If you are unsure if you or your child qualifies for Free or Reduced Price Lunch, you can ask your school office. OUR FABULOUS VOLUNTEERS
The after-school tutoring program could not succeed without our volunteers. They are trained in 826LA’s methods, and they understand how important individualized attention is for our students. Many of our volunteers help out week after week after week, developing tutor-student relationships that enable us to strengthen students’ academic abilities, writing skills, and love of learning.
