Join us in giving a warm welcome to our 2017 Summer Associates! We are so excited to see all of the wonderful work they will do with our English Language Learner Camp students these next couple of months.
Darla is a rising sophomore at Occidental College. Currently residing in South Central LA, Darla enjoys writing and reciting spoken word poetry, playing the piano, and writing new (soon-t0-be hit) songs. She plans to major in both Spanish and Chinese and minoring in education. Darla is truly passionate about education and language acquisition and hopes to impact the way students grasp new languages in the classroom. She dreams of combining her passion for language, education, and music to positively shape America’s public education system.
Mariana is originally from Hermosillo, Sonora, but grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. She comes from a very diverse Mexican-Portuguese family and is almost trilingual. Currently, Mariana attends Cal State LA for Social Work. Upon graduation she hopes to work with the LA County Department of Children and Family Services, advocating for children in foster care. In her spare time, Mariana enjoys spending hours at the beach or exploring her new home state of California by taking road trips.
Yesenia is eager to put into practice all that she has learned through her creative writing career! As an 826LA Intern and a graduate of CSUSB, she feels confident in her ability to inspire enthusiasm about writing. Her future goals include finding the perfect MFA program and finding a new adventure outside of the Inland Empire! Ultimately, Yesenia hopes to instill positive change in the world and believes that even the smallest interaction has infinite opportunities to make a difference.
In 2015, Lily graduated with a degree in English from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. She briefly worked for a TV show’s writers room before coming to intern at 826LA in September of 2016. She’s now on board as a Summer Associate for ELL Camp and is excited to spend the summer working with the students and helping them create crazy, creative stories. And for the field trip to Nickelodeon too, of course. In her spare time, you can find Lily buying too many books at Skylight bookstore, bowling, or cooking dishes with eggs as their centerpiece.
Cathy is a recent graduate from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio where she studied English and art. Cathy has loved interning at 826LA this past year, and is excited to keep working with many of the students from After School Tutoring in Echo Park. When she can find time, she loves to paint things for her friends and find beautiful places to hike.
Frances is a junior at Oberlin College in Northeast Ohio. She is currently working towards her B.A. in Comparative American Studies. Born and raised in LA she comes home every chance she gets. This summer she will be working at 826LA as a Summer Associate for our ELL camp and can’t wait to get to know all the students. In her free time Frances loves cooking for her family and having barbecues with her friends. After this summer she will be living in Buenos Aires, Argentina for 6 months to improve her Spanish and study social activism and public policy in Latin America.
