It’s AmeriCorps Week, and There’s So Much to Celebrate

Four years ago, 826LA welcomed AmeriCorps VISTA into our centers. The Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) members got down to work right away, building 826LA’s capacity to serve Los Angeles students by recruiting volunteers and raising funds to support our programs.

VISTA was founded in 1965 as a national service program to fight poverty in America. In 1993, VISTA was incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs. Today, more than 46 million Americans live in poverty. AmeriCorps VISTA taps the skills, talents and passion of more than 7,000 Americans annually to support community efforts to overcome poverty. Currently, six VISTA members are working to build the capacity of 826LA.

At 826LA, we’ve seen firsthand what a big impact VISTAs can make. Since the beginning of our VISTA project in 2011, our student programming hours have increased by 30%, the number of hours volunteered by individuals in our community has grown by 62%, and more than 27,000 Los Angeles students have received one-on-one support. None of this would have been possible without the hard work of some very dedicated VISTAs.

In honor of AmeriCorps Week, 826LA would like to recognize the support of the VISTAs currently serving at 826LA, and to acknowledge the big impact that VISTAs have made on this organization and on our community. Thank you, Ana, Annie, Tim, Daisy, Mariesa, and Ashley for all that you do.
