In this field trip, students from a local Los Angeles Unified School District school must bring forth their best writing to appease our (volunteer-played) Mr. (or Mrs.) Barnacle, our never-seen, always-heard, and always-cranky publisher. Led by our volunteer storyteller and assisted by volunteer illustrators, typists, notetakers, and brainstormers, students collaborate with each other to produce three written pages of a story with all-new characters, setting, and plot, to go along with three illustrations. The last page will end on a cliffhanger—at which point the students will finish the story by writing their very own unique endings. Should everyone write up to their potential, Mr. (or Mrs.) Barnacle may approve their endings, and all the students leave with a seven-page bound and illustrated book to take home.
