Behind every class of students is an educator who inspires. 826LA is honored to work with such amazing teachers and educators day in and day out.

Mrs. Mendoza has been a high school teacher for 18 years and has been teaching at Ánimo Venice Charter High School for 11 years. In 2015, Mrs. Mendoza began teaching the College Readiness course and working with 826LA during personal statement sessions. She continues to be inspired by the students and the community.

Read on to find out what brings Mrs. Mendoza back the classroom everyday and why Miguel Cervantes inspires her!

What’s your favorite part of teaching at Animo Venice?

The students. The dynamics. The culture. Just what the students bring to the classroom. We have a bunch of different personalities. I can’t say much more for the students. And when anybody asks me why I teach, I say the students. A close second is the staff. The staff is very collaborative and I don’t know one staff member who works harder than any other teacher I’ve met.

What do you notice in your students before and after 826LA personal statement sessions?

I see a huge appreciation for the time that’s been provided for them. It’s almost like a light turns on for them. They might have thought, “Oh, this is the best that I can write” or “This is as much as I could say.” and they’re just in awe, like “Wow I could have been saying it this.” Even though they are on the right path, they are always humbled. “I thought I was doing well, but I can see now I needed a lot more help and support.”

For those that took this seriously, all the support, help, and time — it really made them appreciative of the resource and wished they had more resources like this available to them when they were younger.

If you could meet any writer (past, present, or future) — who would it be and why?

Miguel Cervantes because of the way he was able to tell a story, from beginning to end with detail without being redundant. The way he made his characters flawed — his characters weren’t just heroes.
