A+ Educators: Mr. Abraham of Manual Arts High School

Behind every student is an educator who inspires. 826LA is honored to work with such amazing teachers and educators.

Mr. Abraham teaches Advanced Placement English Language, Advanced Placement English Literature, Advisory, and Expository Composition at Manual Arts High School. He has supported 826LA programming at Manual Arts for the past three years during personal statement season in the fall and Academic Decathlon in the spring. Mr. Abraham is amazed at the resources LAUSD has to offer and believes that there is nothing like teaching at Manual Arts.

Read on to find out Mr. Abraham’s favorite 826LA experience and his plans to hike Mont Blanc!

Why is writing an important skill for students throughout their lives?

Clear writing leads to clear thinking. Writing is fundamental to the self in a way other subjects simply are not. I can’t think of a more important skill.

What are your students’ main takeaways from 826LA personal statement sessions?

They leave with greater confidence about how writing fits into their lives, and they understand just how critical writing is. Also, I think they understand the importance of seeking out additional resources and support systems in order to help develop their skills.

Do you have any standout memories from an 826LA experience?

Of course, it is the speech tutors working with my Academic Decathlon team, particularly Renee. Our students have a lot of practice writing essays, but less practice composing speeches. Of course, there’s also the fear of public speaking. I’ve watched my students go from having nothing on the page to addressing a panel of judges through the feedback they’ve received from 826LA.

If you could travel to any place — past, present, or future — where would it be and why?

So I travel quite a bit, so this is an easy one. Next summer, I’m planning on hiking Mont Blanc. I like being in the outdoors, the fresh air, and the exercise. I also like the challenge of trekking up a really high mountain (Europe’s highest).
