We’re working away…
We found this video of the houses of Carroll Avenue in Angelino Heights!
So the staff of 826LA’s Good Times has been researching for the upcoming issue on people and places. This past Monday we had a guest speaker Adam Rubin who talked about the Victorian houses of Angelino Heights, some of which are more than 100 years old. The little enclave is located to the east of Echo Park lake and to the North of the 101. He told the kids about how LA was a wild west town and brought in historical photos to pass around. This is what the kids learned that evening:
Myles
I learned about back in the day.
Miguel
I learned about old houses and how much they cost, when Angelino Heights was built, and what was in the past that isn’t in the future.
Lauren
I learned about Victorian houses. They are bright colors. They are huge.
Chad
The Hook: Angelino Heights is 120 years old. Angelino Heights is a historic place where there are houses that tell you what happened at that time. They have put the wires underground.
Alex
We just learned the history of Angelino Heights. It is so interesting. It is old. I wish I lived there.
Bianca
They call the houses Victorian for Queen Victoria. Mr. Pinney was 106 years old. (He was the oldest in Angelino Heights.) The houses were built for $6,000.
Alanis
I learned about Angelino Heights. I learned that it was the oldest neighborhood in Los Angeles. They sometimes move houses to Echo Park from where they were built. Echo Park has a big history.
Oscar
I learned that they call the houses Victorian houses because of Queen Victoria. I learned that there’s no power lines over the ground so it looks like old times. Adam from Angelino Heights knows a lot about his neighborhood and taught me a lot about old houses.
Andrew
I learned about L.A. history. A man lives on the second floor and there is a museum on the first floor. The house was worth $6,000.
