6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Since the beginning of the school year, 826LA has partnered with the J. Paul Getty Museum and Jill Usui Datwyler's eighth graders at Mark Twain Middle School on an unforgettable project: our 9th annual Community Photoworks.
Students were introduced to the world of fine art through photography, and mentored by world-renowned photographer Abelardo Morell. They visited the Getty for a private tour of Abe's exhibition, were armed with cameras, and tasked with the challenge of photographing to the theme of "making the ordinary extraordinary."
Over the next week, students took a dozen photos, and then, with the help of 826LA volunteers, narrowed their collection down to one piece that best exemplified our theme. They crafted multiple drafts of artist statements until their words beautifully matched the power of their pictures. Now, their hard work culminates in a landmark exhibition.
We invite all of you to join us for the opening reception of The Awakening of the Ordinary!

Attention all Partners in Time members! We're celebrating the publication of a new book with a holiday-theme written by students from 826LA's After-School Tutoring program. Partners in Time members are invited to join us for this special book release party!
Every day, the students of 826LA's After School Tutoring program write stories based on a monthly theme. Students submit their writing for inclusion in chapbooks, which 826LA publishes throughout the year. To celebrate students’ hard work, 826LA unveils these chapbooks at book release parties, where students read their work to thunderous applause from their families and peers.
Please join us as we celebrate the creativity of our young writers and acknowledge a calendar year's work well done. Light refreshments will be served.
