Write here, right now: 3rd Annual Great Los Angeles Personal Statement Day is starting

Wow!

After a long wait, the big day has arrived! Bus transportation just pulled up outside the green walls of West Adams Preparatory High School, and we’re so happy that the LA’s Promise team is here with us to act as the welcoming party for about a hundred seniors who get to participate in Day One of 826LA’s 3rd Annual Great Los Angeles Personal Statement Weekend!

What

About a hundred volunteers have arrived and parked in the underground garage. Classrooms have been reconfigured as personal statement workrooms for the weekend. And the air is buzzing with excitement: over new faces, a new challenge for the next four hours, and a new opportunity to make that college admission that seemed a bit of a stretch into a reality.

Who

Some of the kids who are lining up to register for their computers and be paired up with an individual tutor right now are very familiar with LA’s Promise: they’re seniors at West Adams Prep. And they’re well-acquainted with the rooms we’ll be using, the quad area we’ve filled up with balloons, and even some of the 826LA staff faces who made this weekend come together.

But about half of our students are coming all the way from the Eastside: as we did in 2011, we’re working in 2012 with several dozen kids who arrive by bus from Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School, a close partner that knows how excited we get about working with college counselor Terry Careto and the sharp minds of Roosevelt’s gradating class.

How

What can you expect from this truly epic weekend? If you’re one of the many amazing tutors who’s gone through our personal statement training and signed up to help a 12th grade public school student on Saturday or Sunday, you can expect several hours of edifying conversation and the substantial joy of helping a young person put his or her dream school a little bit closer within reach. You can also look forward to a delicious free lunch that we’re providing to everyone in attendance today, including boxed sandwiches and a choice of drinks. That’s something that’s possible through the help of our ever-so-giving meal sponsors: IZZE, popchips, and our local friends at Trader Joe’s.

If you’re not part of our event either this morning or tomorrow at West Adams Prep, you can expect plenty of updates from the 826 team as we re-prove that we’re the best writing resource for college-bound seniors in all Los Angeles. We’ll be posting Facebook photos and doing a lot of tweeting as the ingredients come together for each essay-writing student, and the #GLAPSW hashtag will track updates from the many people we’ve brought together for this once-a-year event.

Today we’re working with Roosevelt and West Adams, but tomorrow we’ll be working with fresh groups of seniors from John Marshall High School and Manual Arts High School (in the LA’s Promise family). And we’ll have great pictures and powerful stories from the first day at West Adams Prep.

An emphatic thanks to the LA’s Promise team and our Personal Statement Day sponsor, CHASE Bank. Thanks to our meal sponsors, and to all of our wonderful tutors this year!

We’ve never been more ready to get Los Angeles students into college, and it starts now!
