For about a year, Jose, 6, has been coming to our programs on the Westside, including tutoring, summer English Language Learner Camp, and weekend classes like Writing for Pets (he actually managed to sneak into our tutoring program at only 5½ last year, but sshhh). A student at Beethoven Street Elementary, he gets 826LA homework help from tutors alongside multiple family members: an older sister and three elementary- or middle-school-aged cousins.
With the help of our tutors and interns, Jose is on his way to becoming a confident English-speaker, writer, and all-around great student. After two weeks of appointment-based tutoring after our normal hours ended at 5:30, we were excited to see Jose come in with the ultimate achievement on Monday.
Jose’s last spelling test received a perfect grade: all ten words spelled 100% correctly, for a final score of 4 (it’s kind of like a 4.0 for college students). His review with adult volunteers had paid off! We asked Jose to write a little summary of his accomplishment, and he came up with this:
My First 4 on My Spelling Test
First I put my hand tops on my desk. Then I said please be a 4. Then I saw my test. I got my 4. Then I got a stamp on my spelling test. I felt proud in my head. I felt proud in my brain.
It’s the little breakthroughs like this one – everyday victories – that we think make the happiest advertisements for 826LA. Congratulations, Jose!
