15 for 15: Omar Andrade

In celebration of 826LA’s 15th Anniversary in 2020, we’re bringing you 15 profiles of the people who’ve grown with us and helped us grow.

Omar Andrade is a longtime Mar Vista volunteer and a familiar face to everyone in our Tutoring program. He talked to us about why working with students is rewarding.

How did you first encounter 826LA?

I got started about four years ago. I didn’t know about Tutoring till the Mar Vista Art Walk. I’ve always wanted to volunteer, and I’m great with kids. Also lucky enough to live a few blocks away.

How has 826LA impacted your life?

I feel great and happy after I’m with the students. Some parents will ask me how their kids did or if there’s something they need to work on. I took bilingual classes at a young age, and I’m glad I did. It’s nice to help the Spanish-speaking kids who need help and pay that back. It also makes me need to relearn math.

What would you like to see for 826LA students 15 years from now?

In 15 years, I would like to see all the students happy. Some done with school, some still learning, but doing what they want.

Why is writing important?

Writing is important to express what you can’t or don’t want to actually say. To tell all the crazy stories or amazing things going on in your head. To get your voice heard without actually speaking.
